So what are they?
Some common uses are: workshops, garages, RV storage, general storage, self-storage, agri-barns, manufacturing, industrial, mezzanines, and even homes.

Unlike traditional pre-engineered steel buildings, the framing is mostly made from galvanized steel in various thin light gauge Cee and Zee shaped structural members. The roofing and siding is made in many various styles and colors of corrugated panels. They are usually narrow structures, up to 60’ wide in some cases and any length. The walls and roofing can be insulated with various thickness and types. If wider clear spans are necessary, or if heavy AC units are required on the roof, traditional pre-engineered steel buildings are the
way to go.

Cold formed steel buildings are pre-engineered and when purchased, they include the professional engineering data drawings required for the building department review. These structures are very light weight and often can be erected without having to rent expensive equipment and keeping construction cost down. Usually no welding is required. Once permits are issued the building can be released for fabrication which usually only takes about 3-5 weeks. In the meantime the soil grading can begin and foundation can be placed by the concrete crew.

Shoemate Buildings, Inc. was one of the earliest contractors to utilize cold formed steel buildings for its customers. In the early 1980s a company named Curoco Buildings in Richmond, CA supplied these small buildings, self-storage and mezzanines to Shoemate. Curoco is no longer in business, but that design concept is now very popular for all of the same reasons. Computerization is what made the cold formed systems very competitive now and quick to manufacture.
